Chucalissa
Will Unveil Student Mural May 1
For
release: Apr. 25, 2003
Over
100 students from the Memphis area participated in the creation
of a new mural to be unveiled at Chucalissa Museum on May
1 at 3:30 p.m. The Sinti (Serpents) is a mosaic mural based
on a design taken from one of the beautifully engraved prehistoric
vessels excavated at Chucalissa.
The
mural was created by 4th through 6th grade students from J.P.
Freeman School and Maria Montessori School under the direction
of Memphis artist Elisabeth Childress. This program gave the
students an opportunity to spend a day making a large, durable
piece of public art, while learning about the culture of Memphis'
earliest residents, the Native Americans. This project was
made possible, in part, by a grant from the Tennessee Arts
Commission.
The
ceremony is open to the public. Chucalissa is located in T.O.
Fuller State Park. To get there, take exit 9 off I-55, south
of downtown Memphis.
Please
call 785-3160 for information.
