"Girls Experiencing Engineering" Program Expands This Summer

In 2004 the Herff College of Engineering at the University of Memphis instituted a program to help young women learn more about engineering. Because the "Girls Experiencing Engineering" (GEE) program was so successful, it will be offered again this summer with expanded sessions for middle and high school students who live in Memphis and Shelby County.

Nationally, only 11 percent of engineers are women, as compared to the legal and medical professions, where one-third are female, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Over the past two decades, the number of women enrolled in undergraduate engineering programs has changed little. Currently, women make up only 20 percent of engineering undergraduates.

The Girls Experiencing Engineering program aims to change that statistic. High school and middle school students can learn about engineering through this fun, learn-by-doing program. Through hands-on projects, participants will discover what engineers do and how skills like creative thinking, problem-solving, and communication can contribute to their future success. GEE students will meet practicing women engineers, who will share inspiring information about their educational paths and careers.

This summer, the Herff College will offer three one-week GEE sessions. The first session, June 6-10, is for students entering grades 10-12 this fall. The remaining sessions, June 20-24 and June 27-July 1, are for girls entering grades 7-9. Activities for all the sessions will run from 8 a.m. until noon at the Herff College, located at the corner of Central and Zach Curlin on the main campus of the U of M.

GEE is open to girls who attend school in Shelby County. Math and science teachers are also encouraged to participate. There is no charge for the program, which is sponsored by the Women's Foundation for a Greater Memphis.
