Dr. Cyril Chang, an expert on economic issues related to health care, will address 648 graduates at the University of Memphis' summer commencement Sunday, Aug. 15. Ceremonies will begin at 3 p.m. at The Pyramid.

Chang, a professor of economics, is the recipient of the 2004 Board of Visitors Eminent Faculty Award. The award recognizes exceptional and sustained contributions to scholarly and creative achievement, teaching, and service, all of which bring recognition to the University.

A faculty member at the University since 1981, Chang teaches health care and executive MBA economics at the U of M. He is also a voluntary professor in the department of preventive medicine in the College of Medicine and the department of community nursing in the College of Nursing at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center.

Chang also is director of the Methodist LeBonheur Center for Health Care Economics, housed in the U of M's Fogelman College of Business and Economics. The Center was established last year to improve the efficiency of governmental medical programs and study the impact of regional and state trends in health care.

Among Chang's areas of research are the high costs of health care and health insurance premiums, TennCare problems and their impact on the community, and mental health care.

Chang has received numerous awards, including the University's Distinguished Teaching Award, Distinguished Research Award, and the Suzanne Downs Palmer Professorship.

He earned an undergraduate degree in economics from National Chengchi University in Taiwan in 1969 and a master's degree from the U of M in 1972. He earned a doctorate in economics from the University of Virginia in 1979.
