Pulitzer
Prize winner Dr. Alan Taylor will open the fall "Teaching
American History" colloquium at The University of Memphis
on Thursday, Dec. 12. His lecture, "American Colonies,"
will begin at 10:30 a.m. in the University Center. It is free
and open to the public.
Taylor
is a professor of history at the University of California,
Davis. He won the Bancroft, Beveridge and Pulitzer prizes
for American history for his book, William Cooper's Town:
Power and Persuasion on the Frontier of the Early American
Republic.
Among
his areas of interest are early American history and the history
of the American West. He is a graduate of Colby College, and
he received his doctorate from Brandeis University.
Taylor's
visit to The U of M is the first event to take place under
the auspices of the U.S. Department of Education's "Teaching
American History" grant that was awarded this fall to
improve academic achievement by American history students
in the Memphis City Schools. With funding from the three-year
grant, The U of M will provide training for elementary and
secondary teachers of American history through summer institutes.
In addition to the summer courses, the University will bring
nationally known historians, such as Taylor, to campus for
colloquia in the fall and spring.
Eighty
teachers from the Memphis City Schools are expected to attend
Taylor's talk. For more information, call 901-678-4879.
