Local
teachers can learn more about aviation science during their
summer break at the annual Basic Aerospace Workshop conducted
at The University of Memphis.
Set
for June 6-26, the workshop covers aviation and space technology
and is funded by a grant from the Tennessee Department of
Transportation. It is open to K-12 teachers and administrators
in public and private schools across West Tennessee. Participants
each pay the University's $18 activity fee, but the in-state
tuition is covered by the grant.
The
workshop is conducted by faculty members from The U of M's
Department of Instruction and Curriculum Leadership within
the College of Education. Teachers receive full in-state tuition
plus a stipend. They will also earn three hours of undergraduate
or graduate credit and four hours of flight instruction at
a local airport.
Participants
in the annual workshop will take field trips to aviation sites
and facilities, as well as attend daily classes at the University.
"We hope that teachers will incorporate some of the information
into their classes the next year," said Dr. Joseph F. Crabtree,
professor of instruction and curriculum leadership.
Crabtree
has been director of the program since its inception 40 years
ago. He said the goal is to develop an understanding of aerospace
concepts and skills, explore the role of aerospace technology
in Tennessee, and provide teachers with resources for classroom
instruction and information about aerospace careers.
Crabtree
encouraged interested educators to apply as soon as possible.
For an application, call Crabtree at 901-678-3435. He will
notify teachers by April 1 if they have been selected for
the workshop.
