of M Will Jump Into Ring with Boxing Symposium Feb. 20

Just
two days before the scheduled Mike Tyson-Clifford Etienne
match, The University of Memphis will hold a symposium on
boxing and is impact on our culture. "Into the Ring with
Boxing: Killer Instincts, Total Knockouts and the Big Purse"
will be the subject of the forum Thursday, Feb. 20, from 1:30-3:30
p.m. in the Mitchell Hall auditorium.
The
event, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored
by the Marcus W. Orr Center for the Humanities.
Speakers
will include Verner Mitchell, assistant professor of English,
"Sports and American Society in Black and White;"
Cynthia Fabrizio Pelak, assistant professor of sociology,
"Some Paradoxes of Gender and Race in the Masculine Domain
of Boxing;" Cynthia S. Runions of the Department of Communication,
"Boxing in American Film;" and Dr. Reginald Martin,
professor of English, "Boxing as a Black Male Capitalist
Index." Martin is a former semi-pro boxer and a current
investor in Pro Fight Dynamics, which is dedicated to bringing
professional boxing to Beale Street and Tunica permanently.
