University of Memphis student Izu Iwueke was selected as a recipient of the 2005 United Negro College Fund/Merck Undergraduate Science Research Scholarship. The scholarship is designed to increase the number of African-Americans in biomedical research careers. The award includes a scholarship of up to $25,000 and two summer research internships with combined stipends of at least $10,000. Iwueke's is one of 15 such awards made this year. “I'm delighted that one of our honors students was selected for the UNCF/Merck Scholarship,” said Melinda Jones, director of the University's Honors Program. “Izu is already a dedicated and accomplished researcher who has participated in summer research internships at the University of Memphis and Vanderbilt University . His career goal is to become a physician-scientist performing cancer research, and I have no doubt that he will achieve this goal.” Iwueke is a junior majoring in biology. He is the son of Harrison and Dorothy Iwueke of Antioch, Tenn.
