That celebrated celebration, Mardi Gras, will be the subject of the next lecture sponsored by the Marcus W. Orr Center for the Humanities at the University of Memphis. Barry Jean Ancelet, professor of French and folklore at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, will present "Cajun and Creole Mardi Gras: The Unbearable Lightness of Begging" Wednesday, Feb.16, at 7 p.m. in Room 218 of the University Center. The event is free and open to the public. A reception will follow the lecture. Ancelet is a native Louisianian and a French-speaking Cajun. His presentation will feature slides and Mardi Gras music, as well as a general discussion of Mardi Gras in French Louisiana. It will focus particularly on the strategies that have been developed to generate laughter, a critical feature of this playful expression of social solidarity.
