The Chinese Student Association at The University of Memphis, in conjunction with the entire Chinese community of Memphis, will celebrate the arrival of the year of the ram with a gala new year's celebration on the U of M campus.

Events will begin at 3 p.m. Friday, Jan. 31, in the University Center, where booths will be set up for art, food, games, karaoke-style music, and other examples of Chinese culture. At 7 p.m. formal ceremonies and stage presentations will begin in the Rose Theatre, adjacent to the University Center.

Local political leaders will be special guests, including Shelby County Mayor A C Wharton and Germantown Mayor Sharon Goldsworthy, and U of M President Shirley Raines will attend. U.S. Rep. Harold Ford Jr. has been invited.
Business leaders, too, will participate in the ceremonies, marking the contributions Chinese have made to the Memphis business community.

Event planners say they have received about 1,700 reservations so far, and they expect 2,000 to 2,500 people to attend the celebration.

For more information, contact Dr. Jiada Mo, professor of mechanical engineering at The U of M, 678-5266. Mo is the faculty adviser to the Chinese Student Association.
