"The Promise" Student Art and Essay Exhibition will make be on display Jan. 14 through Feb. 15 in Memphis at the Black Arts Alliance, located at the Firehouse Community Arts Center, 985 South Bellevue.

The project was inspired by The Promise, an opera based on the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The opera was composed by Dr. John Baur, a professor with the Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music at the University of Memphis, and had its world premiere in October.

The young artists, students in grades K-12, were asked to give visual expression to their own promises to make positive changes in their lives, in the lives of others, and in their communities. Entrants in the essay competition, students in grades 11 and 12, were asked to consider King's promise of a better tomorrow and discuss where the promise takes us in the future.

The winning entries include four essays that were enlarged and mounted for display. The selected works represent public and private schools in Memphis and Shelby County.

Hours for the exhibition are 10:30 a.m.-7 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturdays.
