HURLEY

Dr. Douglas E. Hurley has been named Vice President for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer at The University of Memphis. Announcement of his appointment was made by U of M President Shirley Raines.

Hurley will take office July 14; he succeeds Dr. James Penrod, who stepped down earlier this year to accept a prestigious appointment as Senior Research Fellow with the EDUCAUSE Center for Applied Research (ECAR).

The new vice president comes to the University from Gartner Inc., the world's leading technology research and consulting firm, where he was director of University Relations and a research analyst in the Higher Education Technology Strategies group. In that capacity, he worked with institutions around the world to develop collaborative research initiatives linking Gartner research analysts and university professors.

Hurley also has considerable experience working with higher education leaders and boards as well as IT professional staff and faculty to help them understand technology trends and directions and how technology can be used for strategic advantage in higher education.

Before joining Gartner, Hurley served as associate vice president for Information Systems at the University of Kentucky, where he was responsible for academic and administrative computing services, and as chief information officer and director of Information Technology at UK's Chandler Medical Center.

He also served UK as director and later associate vice president for University Computing Services.

In 1987 he established and subsequently managed the Supercomputer Center for the Commonwealth of Kentucky; the Center provided leading-edge high-performance scientific computing services to researchers across the state.
Hurley has also served on the faculty at Kansas State University and the University of Kentucky.

He holds a doctorate in higher education administration and planning from Kansas State University, a master's degree from the University of Vermont (where he was also a teaching fellow), and a bachelor's degree from Miami University (Ohio). He has also studied at the Wharton School's Aresty Institute of Executive Education.

He served as an officer in the U.S. Navy from 1970 to 1977, reaching the rank of lieutenant commander.

Hurley has extensive experience in research, consulting, and advising higher education administrators. He has been heavily involved in a variety of professional activities and is widely published in his field.
