The
Benjamin L. Hooks Institute for Social Change at The University
of Memphis has recently received $1 million in federal funding.
The new award follows a $835,000 grant from Congress last
year for the Institute's programs on civil rights.
"This
award is truly a testament to Dr. Hooks' lifetime of work
on behalf of human rights, and will allow the Hooks Institute
to expand its efforts to invigorate the national dialogue
on civil rights and social justice," said Dr. Doug Imig,
Institute director.
U
of M President Shirley Raines said she was delighted that
the Hooks Institute will be able to forge better relations
between the University and the community. "We are grateful
to Congressman Harold Ford, Senator Bill Frist, Congressman
Zach Wamp and the entire Tennessee Congressional Delegation
for their belief in the work of the Hooks Institute and for
their efforts to advance this important cause in Washington,
D.C."
