The Benjamin L. Hooks Institute for Social Change at The University of Memphis has recently received $1 million in federal funding. The new award follows a $835,000 grant from Congress last year for the Institute's programs on civil rights.

"This award is truly a testament to Dr. Hooks' lifetime of work on behalf of human rights, and will allow the Hooks Institute to expand its efforts to invigorate the national dialogue on civil rights and social justice," said Dr. Doug Imig, Institute director.

U of M President Shirley Raines said she was delighted that the Hooks Institute will be able to forge better relations between the University and the community. "We are grateful to Congressman Harold Ford, Senator Bill Frist, Congressman Zach Wamp and the entire Tennessee Congressional Delegation for their belief in the work of the Hooks Institute and for their efforts to advance this important cause in Washington, D.C."

For more information on the Institute, contact Imig by phone at 901-678-3369 or via email at dimig@memphis.edu or David Madlock, the Institute's director of operations, by phone at at 901-678-2789 or via email at wdmadlock@memphis.edu.
