Mummy Expert to Lecture At March 26 at U of M

The
Institute of Egyptian Art & Archaeology (IEAA) of The
University of Memphis will host a slide lecture by Dr. Salima
Ikram on Wednesday, March 26, at 7 p.m. in the Fogelman Executive
Center on The University of Memphis campus. The title of the
lecture is "Mummified Menagerie: Animal Mummies from
Ancient Egypt."
Dr.
Ikram, associate professor of Egyptology at the American University,
Cairo, Egypt, has been Director of the Animal Mummies Project
at the Egyptian Museum, Cairo, since 1998 (www.animalmummies.com).
The project's goal is to study, conserve and publish the extensive
collection of mummified creatures including snakes, dogs,
cats, falcons and fish in one of the most famous and fascinating
museums in the world. Dr. Ikram is traveling to the U.S. to
lecture at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and The
University of Memphis.
Dr. Ikram, a zooarchaeologist and faunal analyst, received
a B.A. from Bryn Mawr College and a doctorate in Egyptology
from Cambridge University. She is the co-author of two books,
The Mummy in Ancient Egypt: Equipping the Dead for Eternity
and The Royal Mummies, as well as author of numerous
scholarly articles and a series of children's books on various
topics in Egyptology. Dr. Ikram is well known to television
audiences from her frequent appearances on Egyptian-themed
specials filmed for the History Channel, National Geographic
and the Discovery Channel.
The
lecture is free and open to the public. There will be a reception
