an Egyptian crown. Color a mask while learning about ancient
Egyptian gods. Write your name in hieroglyphs. These are just
a few of the activities children can experience during IEAA
Family Day Saturday, March 20, at the Art Museum of the University
of Memphis.
The
event, sponsored by the Institute of Egyptian Art and Archaeology,
will run from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Visitors may come at any time
during the day. Admission is free, but reservations are encouraged
for groups. Call 678-2649 to make reservations.
Activities
will include special tours of the Egyptian Exhibition at the
museum, storytelling, face painting, designing jewelry and
amulets, making crowns and scepters, and learning how to measure
the ancient Egyptian way.
New
this year is a "School for Scribes." In an intensive
session, children can learn about the ancient Egyptian language.
Enrollment is limited, and children must be 10 or older. Call
the above number to make reservations for the school.
Free parking is available in the Central Avenue lot. Parking
also is available for $1 an hour in the Fogelman Executive
Center garage on Deloach, just south of Central. The Art Museum
is located on the first floor of the Communication and Fine
Arts Building.
The
event is designed to introduce children to the art and culture
of ancient Egypt. The IEAA, a Tennessee Center of Excellence,
and the Art Museum maintain the largest public collection
of ancient Egyptian artifacts in the Mid-South. More than
150 objects are on display representing 4,000 years of Egyptian
history. Exhibits include mummies, royal statuary, amulets,
jewelry, tomb furnishings and items from everyday life.
