The
University of Memphis and the Memphis City Schools are partners
in a program aimed at improving the achievement of American
history students in low-performing schools. The U.S. Department
of Education last week awarded a $983,227 Teaching American
History Grant for the program, directed by Dr. Kenneth Holland,
chairman of political science at The U of M. Dr. Janann Sherman,
associate professor of history, is academic director for the
program.
"Under
this grant, The University of Memphis will provide training
for elementary and secondary teachers in traditional American
history, with emphasis on the important events, people, ideas
and turning points, subjects that have been neglected in the
social studies curriculum over the past 40 years," said
Holland.
Faculty
from The U of M will provide training for 80 teachers over
a three-year period. They will conduct summer institutes for
elementary teachers and summer graduate courses for secondary
teachers with the theme of rights and liberties. The first
summer will focus on the Revolution and the founding period;
the second summer will be devoted to the Civil War and Reconstruction;
the final summer will emphasize the struggle for civil rights
following World War II.
In addition to the summer courses, The U of M will host a
colloquium each fall and spring. Addressing these session
will be nationally known historians, including Dr. Eric Foner,
DeWitt Clinton professor of history at Columbia University;
Dr. David Oshinsky, Littlefield chair of history at Rutgers
University; and Dr. William C. Davis, director of programs
at the Virginia Center for Civil War Studies. University of
Memphis faculty members will conduct workshops on integrating
the material into classroom discussions.
Other
project partners are Facing History and Ourselves, the National
Civil Rights Museum and the National Writing Board.
