Shelton Reed, a noted sociologist whose expertise is in regional
studies and the American South, will speak Nov. 5 at the University
of Memphis. He will discuss "What's Southern About the
South?" at 1 p.m. in the Brister Building, Room 202.
The
lecture is free and open to the public, but seating is limited
and reservations are required. To reserve a place, call 678-2611.
Reed
is professor emeritus at the University of North Carolina,
where he was a professor of sociology and director of the
Institute for Research in Social Science. His books include
One South: An Ethnic Approach to Regional Culture;
Minding the South; Southern Folk, Plain and Fancy;
and Whistling Dixie: Dispatches from the South.
