Managers
from more than 10 federal agencies will be at the University
of Memphis on Friday, Sept. 10, to discuss federal funding
that is available to small businesses for their innovative
research. The managers will hold conferences from 8 a.m. to
1 p.m. in the FedEx Institute of Technology on the U of M
campus.
During
conferences, managers will discuss opportunities to obtain
funding and meet individually with business owners, entrepreneurs,
scientists, and engineers. The managers represent such agencies
as the National Institutes of Health, the National Science
Foundation, the Department of Homeland Security, the Department
of Defense, the Department of Transportation, the National
Aeronautics and Space Administration, the Department of Energy,
and the Environmental Protection Agency.
The
goal of the bus tour is to raise awareness of the SBIR and
STTR programs among small technology companies. The programs
awards funds to U.S. companies with 500 or fewer employees
for conducting research-and-development projects that have
commercial potential in the private or public sector.
Representatives
are traveling on an eight-day, six-city SWIFT V (SBIR/STTR
Where Innovation Focuses on Technology) outreach tour. The
Small Business Innovative Research and Small Business Technology
Transfer programs offer more than $2 billion annually to small
American businesses and research institutions. Other stops
include St. Louis, Chicago, Indianapolis, Detroit, and Louisville.
