Kip Fulbeck Presentation Will Focus on Multiracial Asian-Americans

Award-winning artist, slam poet, filmmaker, and author Kip Fulbeck will give a multimedia presentation at the University of Memphis addressing identity politics and multiracial Asian-Americans through photography, spoken word, and comedy. This free event will begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday, November 18, in the Michael D. Rose Theatre.

Fulbeck, who is of Cantonese, English, Irish, and Welsh ancestry, speaks on issues of identity, body art, and multiracialism. His presentation is a part of the Hapa Project, which offers a chance for people of mixed racial descent to answer the question “What are you?” in their own words and to be pictured in simple portraits.

Hapa is a slang word for Asians and Pacific Islanders of mixed ethnic heritage. The project inspired a book, Part Asian, 100% Hapa, which will be available for purchase after the presentation.

In addition, the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee is participating in a food drive competition against the other Conference USA institutions during November. C-USA is encouraging participation across campus, and a drop box will be provided at this event. Those who attend are encouraged to bring a canned food item.
