Noted Author Richard Bausch Will Teach Fiction Workshop During Spring Semester

Aspiring fiction writers can polish their skills next spring during the Moss Workshop in Fiction, led by award-winning author Richard Bausch at the University of Memphis. The free class is exclusively for people who have no connection to the University; the only other requirement is talent.

The workshop will meet on Mondays, 5:30-8:30 p.m., Jan. 26 through April 27 in Patterson Hall.

Applicants must submit a manuscript of 10-14 pages by Dec. 15. Those selected will be notified by Jan. 14, 2009.

Manuscripts should be sent to Richard Bausch, Moss Workshop, Department of English, 429 Patterson Hall, The University of Memphis, Memphis, Tenn., 38152. A submission should include the writer’s name, phone number, and e-mail address.

Richard Bausch

Bausch was born in Fort Benning, Ga., and grew up near Washington, D.C. He holds a B.A. degree from George Mason University and an M.F.A. degree in creative writing from the University of Iowa. He is the author of 11 novels and seven collections of short stories, including Take Me Back (which was nominated for the PEN/Faulkner Award), The Last Good Time (which was made into a feature film), Mr. Field’s Daughter, Violence, The Selected Stories of Richard Bausch, In the Night Season, Thanksgiving Night, and Hello to the Cannibals. Bausch’s most recent novel, Peace, was published last spring by Alfred A. Knopf.

The author’s short stories have appeared in several prize-winning anthologies, including Best American Short Stories, O. Henry, and Pushcart. Awards he has received include a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship, a Guggenheim fellowship, the Lila Wallace-Reader’s Digest Writer’s Award, and the Award in Literature from the Academy of Arts and Letters. Formerly professor of English and the Heritage Chair of Creative Writing at George Mason University, Bausch now holds the Lillian and Morrie A. Moss Chair of Excellence in English at the U of M.
