Terry Umbreit has been named the first InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) Chair of Excellence as well as director and professor at the Kemmons Wilson School of Hospitality and Resort Management at the University of Memphis.
Umbreit was Taco Bell Distinguished Professor at Washington State University School of Hospitality Business Management and had served as its director since 1984. The WSU program is one of the oldest hospitality programs in the country and is regarded as one of the best in the nation.Umbreit’s expertise is in hospitality management and education, with his research and publications focusing on hospitality human resources. He has been president and chair of the International Council on Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Education and still serves on ICHRIE committees. The Kemmons Wilson School of Hospitality and Resort Management, a 138,000 square-foot facility funded by a $15 million gift from Holiday Inn founder Kemmons Wilson, is an impressive four-story structure that functions as an 82-suite full-service hotel. Many classes are taught inside the hotel, granting students a unique and valuable insight into a career field that is one of the largest employers in the world. The Kemmons Wilson School is housed within the University’s distinguished Fogelman College of Business & Economics.
